Nor'easter: Travel Ban To Take Effect; Blizzard Warning Issued For Part Of State

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont is cautioning that residents should batten down the hatches and stay inside as the state prepares for a major Nor’easter that could bring more than a foot of snow and whipping winds to the region.

Lamont announced that in coordination with neighboring Massachusetts and Rhode Island, he will be implementing a travel ban on all tractor-trailers statewide beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, while encouraging all residents to stay off the road to allow crews space and time to clean up from the wintry weather.

"We're ready for what could really be a rough storm,” Lamont said. “Don’t go on the roads. Stay home tomorrow.”

The Department of Public Health also canceled all mobile COVID-19 pop-up clinics on Jan. 29 and Sunday, Jan. 30, while the National Weather Service issued a Blizzard Warning for New London County and other parts of the region.

According to AccuWeather.com, much of the region is now expected to see between 6 and 12 inches of snowfall, with up to 24 to 36 inches now possible in Eastern Long Island and Eastern New England, with sustained winds exceeding 55 mph.

“We've been in contact with all our neighboring states," Department Of Transportation Commissioner Joseph Giulietti announced. "Metro-North will run a limited service tomorrow so please use CT Travel Smart to find out what's going on.

“We also know that Amtrak will suspend service as of their last train tonight and will not be operating tomorrow. The buses will also be shut down tomorrow."
